Staying steady on your feet isn’t just about balance—it’s about confidence, strength, and moving through life without fear. If you’re an older adult living in Philadelphia, there’s good news: with just a few simple exercises, you can improve your stability and reduce your risk of falling.

At Stand Up to Falls, we specialize in giving seniors the tools they need to stay independent. As part of our mission to promote senior fitness in Philadelphia, we’re sharing five proven exercises that can help you move more safely and confidently through your day.

1. Sit-to-Stand Transitions

This foundational movement improves lower body strength and simulates getting up from a chair safely. It builds leg and hip power, which is essential for walking, climbing stairs, and preventing falls.

How to do it: Sit on a sturdy chair, cross your arms over your chest, and stand up without using your hands. Lower back down slowly. Repeat 8–10 times.

2. Tandem Stance Hold

This simple balance drill trains your feet, ankles, and core to stay steady.

How to do it: Stand with one foot directly in front of the other, heel to toe. Hold for 30 seconds, then switch sides. Use a chair for support if needed.

3. Single Leg Marches

Mimicking the action of walking, this move enhances gait control and single-leg stability.

How to do it: While standing tall, lift one knee up toward your chest, then lower it. Alternate legs for 10–15 reps. Focus on posture and keeping your foot rooted.

4. Lateral Leg Lifts (Hip Abduction)

Strong hips protect against sideways falls, which are the leading cause of hip fractures.

How to do it: Stand near a wall or chair. Slowly lift one leg to the side without leaning. Repeat 10 times, then switch legs.

5. Walking with Posture Awareness

A purposeful walk with upright posture, eyes forward, and slow, steady steps can train safe movement patterns.

How to do it: Walk across the room while practicing good posture. Scan ahead with your eyes and focus on staying tall.
