Each year, one in four adults over 65 experiences a fall—and many of those happen right at home. For older adults living in Philadelphia, everyday hazards like narrow rowhome stairways, poor lighting, or uneven sidewalks can quickly become dangerous.
But here's the good news: falls are not a normal part of aging. With a few smart changes, you can reduce your risk and stay independent, mobile, and confident.
Here are five fall prevention tips every senior in Philadelphia should follow—plus a chance to learn even more at our upcoming free fall prevention seminar in South Philly.
1. Light Up Your Home
Good lighting can make all the difference, especially in older Philly homes with dim hallways or steep basement steps.Tip: Install brighter bulbs, especially in stairwells, bathrooms, and hallways. Use night lights in bedrooms and bathrooms to reduce nighttime falls.
2. Remove Tripping Hazards
Throw rugs, electrical cords, and clutter are all common trip hazards.Tip: Secure cords against walls, remove loose rugs, and clear walkways. If you're living in a smaller home or rowhouse, organization is key.
3. Upgrade Your Footwear
Worn-out or slippery shoes can lead to falls, even inside your home.Tip: Choose supportive shoes with non-slip soles—no flip-flops or slippers with worn tread. Avoid walking barefoot on hardwood or tile floors.
4. Watch for Vision Changes
Eye conditions and glasses (especially bifocals) can throw off depth perception.Tip: Get annual eye exams and talk to your doctor about how your prescription affects your balance.
5. Strengthen Your Body
The stronger your legs and hips, the better you can catch yourself if you trip.Tip: Simple exercises like Sit-to-Stands and Tandem Stance Holds can make a big difference. You’ll learn how to do both—and more—at our upcoming event.
